Science and heritage institutions are increasingly focusing on digital products and services. In various initiatives, they contribute to parts of a common public digital information infrastructure. But how robust are these initiatives anyway? And is the pace of development of public digital services high enough to keep up with the major players on the web? A broadly supported vision as a framework for such initiatives seems to be missing. A consequence of this is that the public digital infrastructure looks vulnerable and often not sustainable.
